Do Sunglasses Help Protect Your Eyes?

At the practice of Dr. Edwin M. Schottenstein, your vision is our priority. We want to do all we can to make sure that you not only achieve the best vision possible, but your eyes are protected and healthy as well. We don’t only extend this help when you come in to visit your Manhattan and NYC ophthalmologist, but we also want to give you the helpful everyday advice needed to keep your eyes healthy throughout your life. One of these suggestions that we offer is to wear sunglasses as they can help protect your eyes.

Is Wearing Sunglasses Beneficial for Your Eyesight?

The same way that your skin needs protection from the sun’s rays, your eyes need protection from them as well. The right pair of sunglasses can provide this protection for your eyes from the sun. Sunglasses can block out over 99 percent of UVA and UVB rays that can be harmful to your eyes. People who spend a lot of time outside in the sun and don’t wear sunglasses will have more of a risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration. It can also even help protect your eyes from skin cancer that can develop around the eyelids. Also, sunglasses are much more comfortable as well and they’ll be able to cut down on glare. If you have contacts, they’ll even be able to protect your eyes and lenses from wind, dust, and debris.

We recommend wearing sunglasses as often as you can when you’re outdoors and doing anything in the sun. Even on cloudier days and in the winter months, wearing protective eyewear is a great idea because the sun’s UV rays can still do damage.

Will Sunglasses Always Protect My Eyes?

Not necessarily. Even the best sunglasses won’t always be able to protect your eyes from intense light. Intense light can include light from tanning beds, welding torches, and even staring directly into the sun. They can potentially damage the retina and cause permanent vision loss. If you’re going to be around intense light, you should ask your eye doctor about how to best protect your eyes in these specific situations.
