Your Upper West Side and Chelsea NYC ophthalmologist, Dr. Schottenstein, provides patients of all ages with superior eye care. Whether you need cataract surgery in Chelsea or require diabetic eye care in Washington Heights, we welcome you to our practice as we offer specialized eye care in NYC. One of the various conditions that we treat frequently is dry eye syndrome.

Dry eye occurs when the eyes produce insufficient tears or when the tears evaporate too rapidly. When left untreated, this inadequate production of tears can be irritating. Just carrying out everyday activities can become frustrating from reading or watching television to driving or working on the computer.

The most common form of dry eye is evaporative dry eye syndrome. This is a condition that affects millions of people. This form of dry eye results from a shortage of oil (lipids) on the surface of tears caused by a blockage in the eyelid (meibomian) glands that results in tears evaporating faster than normal.

Symptoms Of Evaporative Dry Eye

If you are struggling with uncomfortable evaporative dry eye syndrome, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Eye dryness
  • Burning or stinging
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye redness
  • Eye discharge

LipiFlow Treatment For Evaporative Dry Eye

Dr. Schottenstein provides patients with evaporative dry eye a new treatment called LipiFlow. This procedure is designed to treat the root cause of evaporative dry eye that are blocked meibomian glands. This procedure opens and clears these blocked glands, allowing them to resume the natural production of oils needed for a healthy tear film.

LipiFlow Treatment’s Process

If we determine that you have evaporative dry eye, we can provide you with a single LipiFlow treatment that is fast, effective, and safe. This is a non-invasive treatment that can be performed at our office in just a few minutes. LipiFlow relies on the application of localized heat and pressure to the eyelids. We simply place a disposable eyepiece over the eyelids. This eyepiece delivers controlled heat to the inner eyelid and intermittent gentle pressure to the outer eyelid. This opens the blocked glands to release oils for proper lipid flow.
