LASIK Eye Surgery FAQs

Have you ever wanted to have improved vision? Dr. Schottenstein is glad to offer you just that with our LASIK surgery! We encourage you to come to visit your NYC eye doctor some time and see what this fantastic surgery can do for you! If you have any curiosities about it though, we’ll be glad to help you out with this simple list of LASIK FAQs that we’ve compiled for you.

What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK surgery is a procedure that’s designed to correct a patient’s vision and either reduce or completely eliminate the need for contacts or glasses. An excimer laser will gently reshape the cornea with computer-controlled precision in order to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

What Does LASIK Stand for?

LASIK stands for Laser in situ Keratomileusis.

What Will Occur During My LASIK Evaluation?

You should plan for a visit of about two hours with us. You’ll undergo an exam as well as special testing that’ll be used to measure and evaluate your eyes. You may have your eyes dilated in preparation of a detailed eye exam that will be able to examine refractive error, pupil size, and a corneal evaluation. Your NYC eye doctor will also discuss LASIK surgery with you and determine if you’re a potential candidate.

What Are the Requirements for LASIK Surgery?

Candidates for LASIK surgery should typically:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have healthy eyes and a stable eye prescription for at least the last 12 months.
  • Not be pregnant or nursing.
  • Have no corneal diseases.
  • Have no significant eye or medical problems.

Will LASIK Give Me 20/20 Vision?

While LASIK can greatly improve a patient’s vision, unfortunately, no one can guarantee you perfect vision. Despite that, there’s still an overwhelming likelihood that you’ll be able to play sports, watch television, drive, and engage in all your favorite activities without the need for glasses or contacts.

Is LASIK Surgery Safe?

Thankfully, yes! Complications during LASIK surgery are incredibly rare. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to speak with your NYC eye doctor about them.

Is the LASIK Process Painful?

Most patients are surprised to find out that LASIK surgery isn’t painful at all. Anesthetic drops are used to fully numb the eye before surgery begins. During the surgery, you may feel light pressure around your eye. If needed, you may be given a mild sedative beforehand to help you relax. Afterward, your eye may be a bit irritated, but this should pass after a few hours. You’ll be prescribed eye drops to provide healing and comfort for the next few days.

When Can I Resume Normal Activities After LASIK Surgery?

You might even be able to resume your normal activities the next day! The healing process from LASIK is typically very rapid and most patients are able to see clearly again about 24-48 hours after surgery. There may be some minimal restrictions in the first few weeks; your doctor may recommend avoiding certain activities such as swimming or contact sports.

How Long Will the LASIK Results Last?

The vision correction that you attain from LASIK is fairly permanent. However, you’ll still undergo age-related changes to your vision, which would occur whether you’ve had LASIK surgery or not.

Are There Any Side Effects Following LASIK Surgery?

While complications are incredibly rare, you may undergo a few temporary side effects, which will typically clear up in a few weeks or months. These include dry eyes and temporary visual disturbances such as glares, halos, and double vision.
