Does Exercise Help Eyesight?

While you obviously know how exercise can help your body, you may be surprised to know that can actually help your eyesight as well. Studies have shown that exercising can actually decrease the risk of developing eye problems and conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma, and wet age-related macular degeneration.

Getting your exercise (and having a good diet as well) can also play roles in keeping your body healthy against conditions that can eventually lead to eye problems. For example, if you’re not in shape, you may have high cholesterol or blood pressure, which can potentially lead to vision problems. Also, regular exercise along with dieting can help stave off diabetes – a condition that can sometimes lead to diabetic retinopathy, which is harmful for a person’s eyes.

What Should You Do?

Simply exercise. As your NYC ophthalmologist and team, we recommend finding a way to carve some time in your schedule so that you can fit in somewhere between three-to-five times per week of exercising. It doesn’t need to be strenuous and you don’t need to look like a bodybuilder afterward, but three-to-five mild exercise sessions will be great for both your eyes and your body. In fact, exercising three or more times during the week will make you less likely to develop wet age-related macular degeneration. If some of the time you spend exercising is either running or walking, you can also decrease the risk that you’ll develop age-related cataracts. Pair that with your regular eye exams at your Manhattan eye doctor and you’ll be well on your way toward a path to optimal visual health!
