Symptoms of Dry Eyes

Some of the symptoms you may have if you have dry eyes or dry eye syndrome include the following:

  • Burning sensation in your eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Sore eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigued eyes
  • A feeling that there’s something in your eyes

Causes of Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are caused by a lack of adequate tears. Some of the reasons this may occur can be due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Aging
  • Certain medical conditions (especially thyroid problems, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Wind or dry air
  • Staring at a computer screen for too long
  • Certain antihistamines or antidepressants
  • Eyelid problems

How to Treat Dry Eyes

While there are many different ways to treat dry eyes, here are some of the more common and efficient ways we can treat dry eyes:

  • Artificial tears – These are mostly over-the-counter lubricating eye drops that come in many different formulations and are best for treating mild dry eyes.
  • Restasis – Restasis is a prescription eye drop that lubricates the eye, reduces inflammation associated with dry eyes, and helps the body produce more natural tears.
  • Xiidra – Like Restasis, Xiidra is an eye drop that’s used to kick-start tear production and reduce eye inflammation.
  • Lipiflow – This is an automated, in-office treatment that uses a type of warm compress therapy and pulsed pressure to correct the balance of oils in the tear film and reduce dry eye syndrome.
  • Punctual Occlusion – This is a procedure that involves plugging the small openings in the corners of the eyelids so that they don’t drain too rapidly.

Why You Should Visit Dr. Schottenstein

If you’ve had prolonged signs of dry eyes or dry eye syndrome, we recommend stopping by and visiting Dr. Schottenstein. Dr. Schottenstein will be able to determine the severity of your dry eyes and prescribe you with the proper medication, such as Xiidra or Restasis, or another kind of treatment for your case. Also, we can determine if any of your activities or lifestyles are contributing to your dry eyes and we can help make the appropriate adjustments. It may even be something as simple as purchasing an air humidifier or just taking more breaks from the computer.
