At Dr. Edwin M. Schottenstein’s, we strive to deliver comprehensive and compassionate eye care to all those in and around NYC, Chelsea, and the Upper West Side. We provide a wide range of eye treatments and procedures with the ultimate goal of getting you to see 20/20. There are many barriers to a person achieving perfect vision, one of these being cataracts. Cataracts can disrupt a person’s vision and make everyday activities much more difficult. In these circumstances, we’ll need to remove the patient’s natural lens.
Since the lens is being removed though, it must be replaced with another lens – an IOL (intraocular lens). Conventional IOLs are only monofocal, offering vision at only one distance (either near, far, or intermediate). Those with conventional IOLs would require corrective lenses to compensate for the other distances. However, there’s also a newer option – multifocal IOLs. These multifocal IOLs provide patients the ability to see clearly at more than one distance without the need for contacts or glasses.
We proudly offer the following types of advanced IOLs in our NYC office.
The AcrySof ReSTOR IOL provides patients with quality vision up-close, far away, and everywhere in-between. For most patients with AcrySof ReSTOR, glasses and contact lenses aren’t needed. However, AcrySof ReSTOR won’t be recommended if you see glares while driving at night or you have psychiatric disorders.
ReZoom IOLs are the second generation of the Abbot Laboratories multifocal IOL. ReZoom IOL provides both a full range of vision and greatly reduces a person’s need for contact lenses or glasses. It’s designed with five unique visual zones. These zones have the sole purpose of providing clear vision for different focal differences and lighting environments. Research has shown that ReZoom lenses have a 92 percent success rate in reducing or even eliminating a patient’s need for wearing glasses. You may be a candidate for ReZoom if you:
Crystalens IOL isn’t a multifocal lens implant, but an accommodating lens implant. Our eyes will naturally age over time, making it more difficult for our eyes to accommodate their focus during everyday activities. This is referred to as loss of accommodation, or presbyopia. This is also why most people over 40 need to wear glasses.
The Crystalens is designed with a hinge that moves the optic part of the lens back and forth as you focus on different objects. Studies have shown that 90 percent of patients with Crystalens IOLs are able to see clearly at any distance without the use of glasses or contact lenses.
